A TIME OF TRANSITION
This body of work is inspired by the change in the natural lighting from winter to spring. The low sun in the winter sky cast shadows and creates beautiful candy colored sunsets. As we approach spring the quality of light changes and I become aware of the increase in light.
The time during the day that I spend with my daughters is marked by sunrise and the early afternoon sunset. This work is a love letter of sorts to the time that I share with my girls. Each of us, parent and child, is in a constant state of transition. As my girls grow and mature, I struggle between my maternal instinct to shelter and protect them and to allow them their autonomy. During the pandemic we have largely been isolated from other and have spent all out time together in our home. As the world slowly opens, we again transition to what our life will look like. As the old saying goes, they days are long, but the years are short. I feel some ambivalence about our egress from the haven of our safe little home in to the wide world. Our experience is not unique and as children grown and gain more independence it is not so easy for parents to let go. We all experience growing pains as each member of the family is reacting to the passage of time.
I have attempted to create a series of photographs that capture the essence of our lives at this moment in time. I am anxious for everything to be over and at the same time nostalgic for the current time that we get to spend together. Childhood is ephemeral. It is full of anticipation for what is to come. The portraits that I created have all been taken inside our home. My girls were photographed in a mixture of posed portraits as well as more documentary images in our space. I have pushed myself to include images of my husband and myself into this series, not an easy task for someone who is always behind the camera.
